A Hub of Innovation: Boston Hosts ANC24

From July 14th to July 16th, the 2024 Annual National Conference (ANC) of the School Nutrition Association (SNA) turned Boston into a bustling hub for over 6,000 school lunch service workers. This eagerly awaited event offered all-expense-paid trips for attendees, providing an unparalleled opportunity for education, networking, and sampling a wide variety of nutritious foods.

A Storied History

Founded in 1946, the SNA is a national, non-profit professional organization representing 50,000 school nutrition professionals across the United States. The association is dedicated to ensuring healthy school meals and nutrition education for all students. The Annual National Conference is recognized as the School Nutrition Event of the Year, uniting thousands of school nutrition program operators, industry partners, and allied organizations each July.

Education and Exhibits Galore

The three-day event featured more than 120 education sessions and over 800 exhibit booths. Attendees engaged in various networking events designed to inspire innovative approaches and dynamic ideas for reimagining school nutrition operations. The conference kicked off with a keynote speech by Chef Andrew Zimmern and concluded with insights from Astronaut Jose Hernandez.

Addressing Contemporary Challenges

The ANC is renowned for its comprehensive exhibits and education sessions aimed at helping attendees prepare nutritious and delicious school meals while managing budget constraints, a tight labor market, strict nutrition standards, and diverse student preferences. This year's conference was particularly significant, following the release of long-term nutrition standards that require schools to reduce sodium in meals further and adhere to new limits on added sugars.

Innovative Menu Options

Attendees had the chance to taste-test new recipes and menu options with reduced added sugars and salts, such as a reduced-sodium, whole grain Orange Chicken Stir Fry, and reduced-sugar yogurt without artificial sweeteners, flavors, or colors. Culinary demonstrations and workshops offered tips for expanding scratch cooking, including an in-depth session on Boston Public Schools’ transition to scratch meals.

Culturally Relevant and Plant-Based Options

The conference also showcased culturally relevant and plant-based menu options reflecting diverse student tastes, with recipes like Cilantro Lime Brown Rice with Black Beans and Southwest Sauce, and Cheesy Chicken Shawarma. Best practices for accommodating food allergies and special dietary needs, such as Kosher and Halal, were also shared.

Recognizing Excellence

The SNA recognized school nutrition professionals who go above and beyond with national and state awards. The ANC was not only an educational event but also a celebration of the dedication and hard work of those who ensure students receive nutritious meals every day.

Ongoing Support and Resources

In addition to the conference, the SNA offers ongoing resources for its members, including the School Nutrition magazine and the podcast "School Food for Thought," keeping school nutrition professionals informed and inspired year-round.
